some great news tonight in our school watch… enrollment numbers are up at two major universities in our region… university of colorado colorado springs and c-s-u pueblo. news five’s caiti joins us in studio… breaking down the stats and the reasons behind these increases. in the steel city… total headcount this fall about three percent lower compared to last year. however… new student enrollments… freshman and transfers… up by more than four percent. over at u-c-c-s… enrollment surpassing 12,500 in the school’s 12th straight year of growth. 43:39 “it’s awesome to see like how big our school is growing just sports-wise, school-wises, academically-wise you know?” 43:45 the c-s-u pueblo thunderwolves are making a comeback… 25:47 “we’ve had a few years of stagnant or declining enrollment and that’s something that we’ve worked really hard to change.” 25:52 2018 fall enrollement figures revealing an increase in new students as well as record-setting freshman retention. 23;05 “our student retention was about 68 percent.” 23:08 23;27 “we’ve really engaged in the community. we’ve made a concerted effort to refocus on southern colorado and actually the southwestern part of the u.s. and that’s where we saw our growth.” 23:36 more out of state students are coming to the university… but predominantly the campus is made up of coloradans. 42:07 “i picked csu pueblo just because i grew up here.” 42:09 pueblo county’s marijuana-funded scholarships may also be a factor as to why locals are sticking around. 24:15 “we have seen very small incremental growth in pueblo county this year so there’s a chance that that had something to do with it.” 24:22 up north at u-c-c-s…. over 12,500 students… a one percent increase compard to last year and 2,023 freshmen… the second-largest class in history. 36:06 “people like living in colorado springs. it’s a great place to be and so we have a lot of local students that will choose here versus other places.” 36:12 “i’m from here. all 50 states are represented… 37:17 “california, texas, hawaii, arizona and the midwest 37:22 46:52 “i’m from salt lake city, utah.” 46:54 students coming… for a variety of reasons. 44;35 “i wanted to actually get as far away as possible, but after i toured uccs i realized. i love the campus and the people here are really here for your success.” 44:45 47:04 “this is the only university that i felt like i could live at and go to.” 47:08 unique programs like exercise science and engineering… and business… remaining the top major are also factors. how will both schools keep this momentum going? c-s-u pueblo… tells me it will be looking at data… what worked… and build on that success. for u-c-c-s it’s about stability… keeping a strong focus on students and making sure their experience is successful. always watching out for you southern colorado, caiti blase, news five …
