Transcript: 01/25/2018: KOAA (NBC) … developing tonight– a fast growing european cycling adventure company…. chooses colorado springs for it’s north american headquarters. bill folsom is looking into the unique business model and how it fits into the colorado springs, olympic city usa, brand. bill– the company is called haute route. it started in france, doing tours for amateur cyclists along parts of the tour de france course. colorado springs is now the headquarters for north america, in large part because of it’s ties to many other sports organizations headquartered here. haute route happily shares video of their rides. the first, in the alps of france, amatuers following where pro riders raced the tour de france, a year ago, the company tried a north america ride going from boulder to colorado springs. ” haute route is probably one of the more difficult events you can do as an amateur cyclist.” physically demanding, but like pro athletes fully supported with mechanics, meals, and daily massage. ” we help fuel you. we help get you recovered for the next day, every evening we do a briefing.” 2017’s introductory ride was so popular, this year there are four. it started a discussion about finding a north america base. ” should we set a headquarters in colorado, does california make more sense. in the end it came down to a couple cities in colorado.” colorado springs, denver, boulder. all have outdoor cultures……colorado springs stepped up with its olympic city usa sports brand. ” sports is something that’s very unique, not every community had the assets that we do.” there is, of course the u.s olympics…..and 26 governing bodies, including usa cycling. but also things like welcoming major cycling events. the sports management program at uccs. also the overall community interest in health and wellness. ” we have this broad spectrum of sports related companies and organizations within our community and the goal is to obviously really grow that.” haute route adds another business to the local sports brand. alone, a unique business model. combined with all theother local sports oriented businesses……it grows a major economic driver. ” it’s about a 400-million dollar economic impact to our economy locally.” there is a couple of ways to look at the economic impact. an office and employees means people spending pay checks in the community. then there’s the customers…..65% of last years boulder to colorado springs ride were europeans who spent a lot of money tocycle here. …
