Controversial newsletters at UCCS


Transcript: 08/30/2017: KKTV (CBS) … new information tonight. student veterans at university of colorado, colorado springs are addressing a recent controversial newsletter that was posted on campus saying military veterans should be banned from universities. they held an open discussion and panel there today. we first told you about it last week, when viewers reached out to 11 news asking us to look into who wrote the letter. 11 news reporter jessica leicht joins us live on campus now. jess? uccs said today, just like they told us last week, they do not approve the content of the newsletter, but say anyone is allowed to put items on their community bulletin boards because it’s free speech. a spokesperson for the school says the remodeling of this new student veteran center that opened last year, shows they are in tremendous support of these students. around 100 people came to the meeting, to discuss this newsletter titled “social justice collective weekly”. the student veterans organization planned the discussion panel. uccs says the letter has nothing to do with the school and does not represent their values. i talked to a community member and veteran who attended the discussion, he says it was interesting to hear what everyone had to say. bryan haynes/air force veteran 07:01:34 “they talked about thick skin and i agree, most people in the military don’t let things like that affect them. because there’s other things that have happened in their experience that don’t compare to a letter being published.” the person who wrote that newsletter, sent us this today, and say its their newest issue. it does not discuss veterans at all. again, the university says they don’t support this. reporting live in colorado psrings jessica leicht kktv 11 news. developing tonight. …
